Every year the children from several local schools come to Woody Bay to take part in our commemoration of not only the Armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front in 1918, but also to remember all service personnel who lost their life in war zones - including present day conflicts.

This takes place at eleven o'clock in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"  and is particularly poignant for us as our resident steam loco Axe was engaged in the hostilities in France during the 1914/18 war.

AXE carries a plaque as a permanent record of her dedication in 2008 by the Bishop of Exeter  "To all those who served on the railways of the western front in the Great War". 

The Poppy Crosses laid by the children. Each bears the name of a family member or a name from a local War Memorial Roll of Honour. All are names of local men and women who gave their life in defence of their Country.
