Visiting Locomotive: Palmerston

We are excited to announce 'Palmerston' no.4 as our visiting locomotive for this year’s Autumn Gala, courtesy of the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway !

Built for the Ffestiniog Railway in 1864 and named after the chairman of the Welsh slate, copper and lead mining company quarry at  Blaenau Ffestiniog 'Palmerston' was one of the original locomotives.

'Palmerston' was in continuous use although much rebuilt until the mid 1930s when it was converted to a stationary boiler for war work at Boston Lodge.

From the 1930s till the 1970s Palmerston was little more than a rusting hulk and was nearly cut up for scrap in the late 1950s.

'Palmerston' was then restored to steam between 1974 to 1993. Following its boiler overhaul in 2024, 'Palmerston' is currently based at the Vale of Rheidol Railway before travelling to us here at the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.

A massive thank you to our friends and colleagues at the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway for their help!

Meet the home fleet!

We will have our home fleet joining 'Palmerston' for the weekend!

All visitors can enjoy visiting the award winning Chelfham Station, seeing the restored station building, working signals, and now both platforms completely cleared of sheds and clutter finally giving the station its 1930s Southern Railway appearance.

A signposted trackbed walk north towards Bratton Bridge is also possible. As usual a limited range of refreshments of teas, coffees, savories, cakes and biscuits will be available for cash or card donations. The secondhand bookshop with some L and B souvenirs will be open which now also includes a range of donated model railway items.
