Ex South African Railways narrow gauge wagons

Ex SAR DZ9 and NG-Y hopper

In 2015 the railway purchased ex-South African Railways wagons from Sandstone Estates in the Free State of South Africa. The initial delivery was a DZ6 (drop-side) open wagon and a NG-Y hopper wagon. Another DZ6 and NG-Y hopper wagon were purchased the following year and subsequently arrived on the railway. Additionally, a number of spare SAR bogies and vacuum chambers were acquired from the same source.

The railway has two of these wagons, which are used for transfer of coal from delivery point in the car park to the coal stage by the loco shed, movement of permanent way materials around the railway, and the removal of spoil from any other civil activities that occur on and about the railway. The wagons have drop sides which can be removed as required.

The railway has two of these wagons, which are used exclusively for ballasting on the railway. Ballast can be discharged from one or both sides depending on what is required. The wagons can carry 17 tonnes of ballast, and were built by Hudsons.
