During the preparation for the first day of the Members' Weekend on Saturday (11th May), we were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Dave Blencowe on the Friday evening.
It was a great shock to all who knew him when we heard that Dave had died on the evening before the AGM this month. It was totally unexpected.
Dave was a great supporter of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway and tackled any task that needed doing. Recently he had been working at Woody Bay several days each week on accounts, wages, shop, controller – the list goes on.
In 2007 Dave arrived at the AGM and made his presence felt. He became a working volunteer in 2008 and then a director of the CIC from 2010 until 2019 when his working life became more demanding. Last year he found that he was able to spare time and stood as a director again. He was – of course – elected and then took over as managing director this year when Malcolm Smith stood down. His commercial experience was very helpful to the L&B.
Dave was also a guard and re-qualified again last year.
With Dave’s passing we have lost a dedicated member, director and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Update
Laurence Mulchrone, a friend and colleague of Dave Blencowe is working with Chris Davis to arrange his wake at the Exeter Corn Exchange (his wife being the manager of this venue) He is trying to collect as many photos and memories of Dave as possible. Anyone is free to send a photo of Dave, or a short paragraph of remembrance, and he will display them all on the big screen at the corn exchange during his wake. Any submissions can be sent to Laurence at [email protected].
Details for the funeral:
Exeter Cathedral 13.00 Monday 10th June.
Followed by a wake at Exeter Corn Exchange (please enter via the scene dock/stage door, located off George street).
Regardless of how one might have known Dave, all are welcome.
